Internationalization of teaching – inclusion of international themes in undergraduate and graduate classes

The internationalization of curricula of courses at UFES was defined as one of the strategic objectives in the Institutional Policy for Internationalization, approved by the Council for Teaching, Research and Extramural Activities (CEPE). Thus, the Institutional Plan for Internationalization includes various strategic actions connected to this theme, such as: 1) promoting the offer of courses mainly in English and languages other than Portuguese, in graduate programs; 2) promoting the offer of courses along with international institutions (such as COIL – Collaborative Online International Learning); 3) Offer double degrees and cotutelle with partners of excellence abroad; 4) translate course syllabuses and programs to English; 5) promoting the inclusion of courses in international partner institutions which may be validated in curricula at UFES; 6) provide support for the inclusion of courses and focus on English, in the pedagogical projects; 7) updating the academic community about international themes; 8) promoting seminars with professors and students form UFES, about experiences and academic results of joint research; 9) commitment of the professor supported by the institutional programs of internationalization (mobility) to offer seminars/courses in a foreign language, when he/she returns from the visit abroad. Besides, the Institutional Project for Internationalization presented in this document indicates that visiting professors at UFES may offer courses, lectures or seminars while they are visiting UFES. In addition, it is expected the offer of courses in collaboration with foreign institutions through web conference (such as COIL - Collaborative Online International Learning), in order to increase the potential for internationalization of the curriculum of the courses at UFES.

Production of promotional material for UFES in other languages, including the websites of the graduate programs involved

Since 2017, all websites of graduate programs at UFES have dynamic versions in English, supplied by the academic system for graduate studies, that is, all pages are updated in real time, including the offer of courses and publication of theses and dissertations. In 2018, the Spanish version was started. The International Office (SRI) created promotional material in English (video, print material and the Guide for Researcher and Student). In 2017, started the revision of materials, with update information. Besides, it was defined, as a strategic action in the Institutional Plan for Internationalization, the provision of information for international rankings, in order to promote UFES in academic social networks (LinkedIn, ResearchGate and others), as a destination for foreign students. 

Training and qualification of staff for institutional internationalization 

Within the scope of the Institutional Plan of Internationalization, the preparation of the team for institutional reception is planned as a strategic action. Among the strategies designed by the Linguistic Policy for Internationalization of UFES, it is worth highlighting the value of the workers that have access to the linguistic education and that use such competence for the internationalization of the university. This preparation goes beyond the workers currently in the Senior Office of Research and Graduate Studies and the International Office, we aim at a global action on the whole institution. Currently, among the hosting activities, the "Angels in UFES" program stands out, which aims to follow the reception of students, professors and foreign researchers received by the University through a joint action of the International Office with students and volunteers (angels) who commit to welcome a foreigner, helping in their arrival, academic life and daily adaptation. The Mobility Coordination for UFES welcomes the students, selects and trains the angels for the program. The selection of "Angels" in 2018 had 145 students and workers of UFES registered, and it covered the four campuses of the institution: Alegre, Goiabeiras, Maruípe and São Mateus. The main idea is to prepare the whole institution for the reception of foreigners, displaying open doors for the internationalization of its research activities and institutional culture.

Counterparts offered by foreign partnership institutions, when applicable

Reciprocity has been the central theme of interactions between universities, including mutual funding of research activities. However, this type of approach is mainly used in situations involving already established research groups and already established partnerships. In the clear majority of consolidated group cooperation agreements, the financing is bilateral, Brazil and the foreign country involved. However, initial partnerships often need a different approach to consolidate, to strengthen and find their own funding. In addition, cooperation with countries such as Canada, France, Portugal, Spain and Germany usually do not require fees for the reception of students, which helps the development of research projects. On the other hand, countries like England and Australia often charge fees for the reception of students, creating greater difficulties for student mobility. Countries such as China, though, sometimes even pay student expenses in mobility, which proves the differences of approach on this topic. Thus, the approach given to cooperative research projects is still analysed on a case-by-case basis. In general, expenses are shared (expenses of research funding in Brazil are paid with Brazilian resources and expenses of research funding abroad are paid by the country involved), but fees are still negotiated individually in some countries, such as England, for example.

Other counterparts

Most of the actions designed in the Institutional Plan of Internationalization is related to activities funded by the central administration, such as "offering foreign language courses to allow the academic community to interact in other languages" or "linguistically support foreigners through courses and actions of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (PFL) prior to arrival and during their stay at UFES", which are carried out by UFES’s Language Center or by the Coordination of Languages of the International Office; or to "support the professor/student going abroad in diplomatic, documental, linguistic and cultural matters" that is carried out by the International Office, through its Coordination of Outgoing Mobility. Most of the actions designed in the Institutional Plan for Internationalization have been happening independently of the PrInt/CAPES Call for Proposals. However, a significant portion of the actions designed for internationalization require academic transformations and specific investments in graduate programs. The UFES proposal within the framework of the PrInt/CAPES Call is focused precisely on these aspects, the Institutional Project of Internationalization includes academic actions, promotion and mobility within the scope of Graduate Programs involved in the priority themes. Thus, the strategic actions of the GPs within the scope of the Institutional Project of Internationalization for the PrInt/CAPES Call complement the institutional actions under the responsibility of the Central Administration of the institution, integrating the internationalization effort and supporting the implementation/ consolidation of the strategic internationalization plan.
