Theme 1: The Social Issue
THEME 1URBAN ENVIRONMENT TODAY AND TOMORROW:THE SOCIAL ISSUE – CONTEMPORARY CHALLENGES IN PUBLIC POLICIES
Partner countries: Italy, United States, China, United Kingdom, France, Germany, South Africa, Cuba. Rationale: The great changes that the world has been through since the last century are expressed in problems in the fields of Economics and Society. Among these, one can highlight: population growth and urbanization, with consequences such as unemployment, urban violence, dismantling of health and education systems, rapid exploitation of natural resources. In this context, the assessment and evaluation of public policies related to these problems have been consolidated as academic themes of international interest, in different fields of sciences (social, humanities and health sciences), and strategies have been presented to deal with the expressions of the social issue in each country. Therefore, the theme “Urban Environment for today and tomorrow” brings two interconnected dimensions: the social issue and contemporary challenges to public policies. Among the 17 objectives for sustainable development presented by the United Nations, there are proposals to overcome contemporary expressions of the social issue (no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, reduced inequalities, peace, justice, and strong institutions). The expressions of the social issues faced by various countries are similar, but they have a different impact in each country. Thus, challenges for formulating and implementing public policies are common to the international scientific community. Therefore, researchers around the world have developed efforts for proposing innovative solutions, to overcome such challenges. This analysis requires a wide understanding which connects indicators of health, education, and social protection around the world. Creating innovative alternatives, which promote conditions for improving the human quality of life, supported by scientific knowledge and by dialogues with international partners, is an urgent task, in a world view. This proposal presents itself as an innovative strategy, considering methodological aspects and proposed partnerships for producing knowledge. One intends to research, share experiences, and create methodological practices to consolidate a common research agenda among international partners, in an interdisciplinary perspective (Social Policy, Education and Public Health), sharing analyses about the expressions of the social issue and finding answers required by more sustainable and equal cities. |
